Summer Colour

For masses of Summer colour, nothing beats a good display of

Bedding Plants either planted in

the border or in hanging baskets

or patio containers.

We grow only the best varieties

suitable for the North East of

Scotland, all are properly hardened off ready to plant.

Hardening off means gradually

acclimatising the young plants to

outdoor conditions usually by

means of cold frames to which more and more ventilation is applied until they are used to the sometimes harsh conditions of a Scottish Spring.

Buying properly  hardened off

plants is essential for our area.

The correct time for planting bedding plants is mid May onwards when the risk of Spring frost is over.

Hanging Baskets

Hanging baskets come in many shapes and sizes and are useful for introducing colourful plants at different levels. The secret of a

good display is (1) buy quality plants (2) aftercare, in dry weather hanging baskets must be

checked every day to see if they need watering and fed with a liquid fertilizer once a week.

How to plant a hanging basket

First place your basket on a pot

or bucket to keep it steady, if it is a wire one, line it with a basket liner then fill it with a good quality compost. Plants can be gently pushed in through the sides at this stage. Start planting the top with

one large plant in the centre, good centre plants are Geranium, Fuchsia and Double Begonias then work outwards with smaller plants, finish with trailers at the edge. Water thoroughly when finished.

Patio containers

Patio pots, troughs and window boxes can be planted in the same way keeping the taller plants at the back and the trailers to the front, make sure your containers have drainage holes before you start.

Plants that will grow in shade

Begonia, Impatiens (Busy Lizzie), Aster, Pansy, Polyanthus, Sweet Pea, Lobelia, Antirrhinum, Viola, Nemesia.

Plants that like full sun

Marigold, Ageratum, Alyssum, Cineraria, Dahlia, Dianthus, Petunia,

Phlox, Tagetes, Verbena, Salvia.
