Trees and Shrubs

Trees and shrubs form the foundation

of a beautiful garden and can be used in the smallest area provided care is taken when planting.  The miniature shrubs and small weeping trees are best for small gardens.

    Trees and shrubs give us a great deal of interest all the year round. To start with there are the Winter flowering shrubs , examples are Winter Jasmine - Jasminum nudiflorum , Witch Hazel - Hamamelis and Viburnum x bodnantense Dawn.

The next stage is when the first leaves appear in Spring , this provides us with a real treat , favourites are Flame of the Forest -Pieris forest flame and the beautiful Japanese Maples - Acer palmatum and dissectum varieties. All trees and shrubs give the garden a fresh look in Spring

Evergreen shrubs and trees bring even more interest to the garden in Winter when their shape and form stand out against an otherwise dull background. Evergreens come in all shapes and sizes from miniature Rhododendrons and Azaleas to large Holly trees.

Every garden should have some evergreens.

In Summer the shrubs which flower on their new growth give us colour, often right through till Autumn. Examples of these are

Potentilla , Buddleia , Weigela and Philadelphus.

Finally in Autumn many shrubs and trees delight us with their beautiful foliage colour and berries.

For Autumn foliage colour choose  Azalea Knap Hill and Exbury varieties , Fothergilla ,Berberis ,Acer , Prunus  and Enkianthus.   For berries choose the Firethorn - Pyracantha , Cotoneaster and Ilex varieties.

So as we can see Trees and Shrubs give us year-round enjoyment. I have only listed a few examples in each category above , there are many more varieties to choose from at the nursery. We can advise you and help you make the right choice .
