Climbing and wall plants are

invaluable for the modern

garden where they soften hard brick surfaces and add

colour to otherwise dull fences.

CLIMBERS FOR SHADE.

Shady walls and fences can be

brightened up just as well as sunny ones. The climbing Hydrangea - Hydrangea Petiolaris is one of the best ,it is self clinging with brilliant fresh green leaves in Spring and cream lacecap flowers in

mid Summer, in Autumn the leaves turn golden yellow.

Clematis Nelly Moser is another

favourite with rose pink flowers, each petal striped dark pink.

All the Ivies Hedera Varieties especially the golden leaved kinds will brighten up any dull corner even in Winter.

The Firethorns- Pyracantha are

evergreen with white flowers in Summer followed by red, orange or yellow berries in Autumn depending on variety and are quite happy in North or East facing situations.

The Virginia creeper Parthenocissus Quinquefolia is also

good for shade with bright red Autumn leaves.

CLIMBERS FOR FULL SUN.

Honeysuckle- Lonicera varieties

are among the favourites for a

sunny wall or trellis . The early flowering Lonicera Belgica

is one of the best for fragrance being at its strongest in the evening. The later flowering

Lonicera Serotina extends the season with flowers into September.

Clematis are superb climbers

and come in a stunning range of colours. The Montana varieties

give us early colour, from May

and the large flowered hybrids

give us Summer colour. Try growing Clematis or Honeysuckle up an existing tree

for an interesting effect.

SHRUBS FOR WALLS & FENCES

Examples are Ceanothus with blue flowers and the red berried Cotoneaster Horizontalis. There

are lots more.
